Seeking Climbing Friends For Mission Cliffs

Hey

Just found this tribe...I am a new climber who has been going to mission cliffs for about 6 months now.

I've got a climbing buddy but he can't go as often as I'd like...

I warm up in the 5.10's and am pretty able in the low 5.11 range

In june at my peak I climbed a 5.12....once ...

again, all in the gym...I've only climbed outside once in portland...

I have a VERY flexible schedule and thus can climb almost any time.

Oh and please don't focus on the "erotic" aspect of my tribe profile - that has nothing to do with this... that is related to my work and hobbies and the only thing that shares with climbing is rope....

Seriously, platonic climbing partner of either gender sought for climbing at mission cliffs.

Lastly, I would love to go outdoors. I don't yet have much gear other than shoes and a harness...but I can get anything needed. So if you have experience outdoors and want someone who can go climb during the weekdays drop me a line.

I'm an easy going, open minded, saftey first kinda person who likes to check the knot and harness and "same rope" - every time

I live in noe valley, just a 20 min rollerblade from the gym. I often like to go get a smoothie at cafe gratitude after my sauna.

oh my non-tribe name is Evrett

Hello I'm new to the tribe and very new to owning my own business. Prior Biz Dev Mgr at HP in Silicon Valley now gone
wind tunnel owner...
It's a totally cool, safe and INCREDIBLE business to experience human flight WITHOUT the danger of skydiving! Check us out at: www.iFlySFBay.com We fly everyone 3yrs to 93yrs!

Here's the question...how do I promote it in the internet space? MySpace? Google Ad's, Yahoo postings? Mass emails?

I am working on a limited budget (like everyone I know...) planning printed ads, news events for the launch, VIP tours, etc but am really not sure about what the "best practices" are for internet publicity?

Any ideas?

Thank you, Kent Sessions
cheers,

Anyone know of a safe (and, possibly, legal) place to climb buildings in San Francisco? I've bouldered the outside of some apartments, but never climbed more than 10 feet or so.

Thanks in advance.

looking for climbing partners

I am also looking for climbing partners, indoor and outdoor. I used to climb a lot outdoors (back east), between 5.8- 5.10, but its been a long time, and I'm way out of shape! Looking to get back into it. I'm in San Rafael, so I could meet to climb at the gym here, but I'd also be willing to go out to East Bay or Mission Cliffs in SF. Also, I dont know too many of the good outdoor spots around here, though I hear there are some good places north of where I am in Marin, and also in East Bay. So if anyone knows of good outdoor places, Id love to get back outside. I'm a good attentive belayer, and have taught basic/intro climbing to college freshman in the past. I can lead belay, though I dont usually lead myself (though maybe by the end of this season I'll be doing that more, too). So, if theres anyone out there who will be patient with me getting back into it, or who wants someone to trade belays with, let me know!
Thanks!

I have recently moved to the Bay Area from Seattle and I am looking for people to climb with. I climb indoors (City Beach Fremont, and PG Sunnyvale) and outdoors anywhere and anytime I can. I mostly boulder but I am interested in trying outdoor sport climbing. When I am healthy I boulder about V4 outdoor and V4-6 indoors. I have never roped up outside but in the gym I climb 5.10 B/C. I am looking for climbers of any level who just want to get out and climb. I would also appreciate any info on the bouldering in the area. I already frequent Castle Rock but I want to get out to some of the lesser known areas.

My work schedule is rather hectic so I mostly climb after 5 pm or on Sundays.

I am also open to other intermediate climbs. I have a fair amount of gym experience but limited outdoor experience (see above.)

Thoughts on climbing at this site?

What do you think about this lawsuit? What's the story here?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What: RALLY & COURT HEARING. The Washoe Tribe of California and Nevada will be
in court to defend a federal ban on climbing at the sacred and natural Cave Rock.

When: 9:00 AM

Thursday, February 15, 2007

Where: Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals

95 Seventh Street, San Francisco

Who: Sponsors of the rally and vigil include Washoe Tribal members, Advocates for the
Protection of Sacred Sites, Seventh Generation Fund, International Indian Treaty Council,
Indigenous Environmental Network, Citizens of the Pitt River Nation, and Redding Rancheria
Cultural Department.

Why: Cave Rock, located on the shores of Lake Tahoe, is a sacred and traditional site to
the Washoe Tribe and is under threat! A climbing group called The Access Fund is promoting
unfettered access to rock climbers on Cave Rock by taking this case to the 9th Circuit
Court of Appeals despite a lower court 's ruling in favor of the Tribe and the U.S. Forest
Service. The lower court supported the agency 's ban on climbing on Cave Rock out of
respect for the tribe's traditional use rights.

Cave Rock has significant spiritual and cultural value to the Washoe Tribe. Access Fund 's
focus of conserving Cave Rock as a climbing environment directly undermines Native American
cultural integrity, trampling their right to religious freedom and to traditional use.
Rock climbers have desecrated the sacred site by punching holes into the holy shrine and
leaving climbing equipment behind. Traditionally, only medicine people are allowed on Cave
Rock.

Tribal and environmental justice allies demand a halt to the desecration of the sacred and
natural Cave Rock and protection of other traditional & cultural sacred sites!

hi,

my climbing partner is out of town for a couple of months, and i'm looking for someone to climb with at mission cliffs. i like going in mornings/afternoons for a couple of hours (no earlier than 9 though) and am usually there 2-3 times a week. i'm climbing high 10s and low 11s & just took the lead 1 class, so i want to mock lead most of my climbs. If you are at that stage too (or at least willing to put up with me learning to get the rope through the biners), that would be great. I have a rope we can share (but no lead card, obviously). i'm a good+safe belayer, have been climbing frequently for about six months.

i would also be really into heading outdoors, too. I haven't climbed outside much, but now that the weather's better, I want to.

me: 27yo berkeley grad student, male, gay, live in potrero hill, can climb any time except tuesdays and thursdays.

Hello there,

I am looking for a climbing partner, someone who is willing to climb with me two days a week, preferably Wednesdays and Fridays. I go to Mission Cliffs and it would be great to find someone that I can climb with on regular basis. I have couple of friends that I climb with, but we seem to have conflict in schedules most of the time. I have a car so I would be willing to pick you up and drive you back home.

I am not an advanced climber, when I go constantly I get rally good and then I don’t go for a while and I loose it, I’m hoping to change that.

I am 30 yo, Middle Eastern, I live and work in San Francisco, male, gay, fun and outgoing person. I don’t care if you are a guy or a girl, straight or gay as long as I can trust you with my life :).

Please feel free to ask if you have any questions, hope to hear from you

Kind regards,

I'm renting a car in Berkeley and driving down to Palm Springs where a friend will pick me (us) up and go to J-Tree on Saturday the 30th. You're welcome to go the whole or part of the way. I'm renting the car any which way but if you can contribute to the rental cost - whatever you can - and gas that would be very much appreciated.

I'm a very chill dude, going climbing over the New Year, and my ride fell through. I would love some help driving 'cause its a long way for me, someone to chat with, etc.
Interested? Send me an email: e_navot@hotmail.com

Hi All,
Just found this place and thought I would introduce myself. I am always interesded in meeting new climbers (belay slaves) and would love to hear about any climbing spots in the East Bay. I am always willing to answer questions and look forward to getting out and tieing in with some of you.

I have been climbing 16 years, including Big Walls, Ice, Mountain, Trad and Sport and have guided on rock and mountains . I have a pretty good knowledge of Yosemite and am getting my fair share of climbing in Lovers Leap.

gym climbing partners?

anyone here climb at Class 5 in San Rafael? I just joined, and would love a climbing partner. I used to climb a bunch out east, and on several 1-2 week trips in the US in the desert, but its been awhile! So I'm out of shape and would love someone who would climb easy with me and just be there to have fun climbing, no goals or agendas except to climb... I'm not trying reach any specific climbing or fitness goal right now (though of course I'd love to get out on the rock this fall soon too, or maybe do one of the indoor climbing comps) but mostly I just want to get back into climbing again. anyone with me? let me know! I could also climb at Mission Cliffs in SF or elsewhere, depending where/when.
thanks-
Brenda

thats a lie.... im REALLY new to the whole climbing thing. theres no one near my area that has any real climbing experience(if any at all) and i need someone to show me ''the ropes'' of it. the closest thing to climbing ive done is a rock wall at the x games in sf and one boulder in yosemite. so itd be great to have someone with some patience, lol, to like teach and stuff the basics at least(that includes ''how to's'' because i really want to get out there and climb. well anyway im in the east bay (brentwood/oakley area).

thanks a lot

East Wall Route at Lover's Leap

Anyone done that route? I was on it on Monday and I think I got lost on the last pitch. Went to the right looking for the 5.4 route to the right after Bushy Ledge, but it was very runout and mossy (seemed like no one had climbed it in a while) and not much pro. The climbing wasn't that hard just seemed a bit much for a 5.4.

Could also just be that i am CHICKEN! ha ha ha...

Hey there everybody! Is there a place in SF that provides for an indoor rockclimbing experience for beginners? I got my first taste of rockclimbing while I was on vacation in Thailand near Krabi with Kliffsman. Was very nice with the view, the weather, and the adrenalin(thank god for harnesses!) Anyhow, it was only a one day course so I'm thinking I need to start out as a strict novice beginning again(which i am) ;)

oh by the way lol I'm new to this tribe so um... hi! ;o)

Beginning/intermediate level with passion looking for folks to connect with for gym and/or outdoor climbing. I've climbed about 15 times total, have a lot of my own gear, and know how to build a SERENE anchor. Current guesstimate is that I'm in the 5.9-5.10 range. Thinking about investing in a top rope for this season, and looking for folks to partner up with.
Cheers

insider info needed on going to Joshua Tree with a kid in tow....

Cabin fever has struck for me, less than a day into my son's spring break, and I'm eager to get us out of here. I feel drawn to Joshua Tree, but I've never been there... I know there's good bouldering to be found in that park, but I don't know where to find it nor do I know what areas/campgrounds are particularly kid-friendly. He's 7 years old, and I'm not climbing regularly these days, so we're just going more to veg out, nature-style, than to hit the rocks.

Can anyone give me some input? I'm hoping to hit the road within the next few days, no later than Tuesday.

What I'm looking for info on:
* info on the different campsites beyond the basic logistics (the Joshua Tree nat'l park site is helpfully unhelpful)
* what aspects have high kid-friendliness that I should seek out in particular (certain trails, specific bouldering sites, which campsites, etc)
* the odds of having to beat the crowds off with a stick this upcoming week (or alterrnately, the odds of not seeing another human being for a week)....

Have at it, folks. Help a JT newbie out here...

Hi all, I have these shoes I bought back in the day when it seemed climbing was going to be a part of my life. They are aqua, with purple inside and black soles. I only used them a couple times in an indoor gym. They ended up being too small for me, and then I ended up shifting the direction of my life. The shoes have a mark on on side from the wall, but otherwise you can't even tell they've been worn.

I still love climbing, but am not able to do it much due to a shoulder injury. Thus the reason I held onto these shoes. They are for sale for $40. They were about $130 brand new. I live in Sonoma County but come to the Bay quite a bit. I could email a picture if you're intersted - I can't figure out how to post a picture here!

I have a full set of top rope equipment as well as some sport leading gear, extra harness etc...
More Training Questions - 1 arm lockoff

I've always felt that to get better, you just need to climb. Well, I am having trouble with 1 particular move on overhang, and I think that it is a strength issue. It's a common move on 10d, 11a steep overhang, where you need to lock off with one arm and reach up to a hold, usually at about 45 degrees. It usually is reachy for me, I am 5'3".

A friend that I climb with can lock off 1 arm (with both feet on the wall, but this is steep overhang) and do the move static. In fact, she can just hang there for several seconds on 1 arm without a problem. I can't keep myself up on 1 arm, and so have to do the move dynamic.

Anyway, the question is, do you think that training for this move, by intentionally hanging from 1 arm will lead to bad technique? Do any of you do this type of training and how has it worked for you?

So I want to surprise a friend while he's out of the country by contructing and installing a Hangboard at his house. Curious whether it's more economic to make one myself or buy one, and if making is easier, where I would obtain the diagram and plans for it. Any Suggestions? Thanks in advance -

It is with sadness I'll be cancelling my Ironworks membership, after only 6 months and a recently attained permanent belay card. Expenses are too tight right now (sick cat mostly- mew). There is always the option of doing some climbing on actual rocks and bouldering outside. It's a little hard to be motivated by oneself though, not to mention dangerous, which is why I appreciated the Ironworks facility.
If anyone wants to climb locally, I would not refuse the invitation, hint hint.
This sucks as I have been looking forward to a new sporting endeavour for many years. Now I'm back to piecing by bikes together for on and off road rides.

Hello all. Going to the gym to lift weights has left me in a seriously dull rut. So I figured I try walking on rock to help keep in shape. Not to speak of the mental aspect.

i'm new to Tribe and also this tribe. is this solely a community of trad or top rope climbers, or do boulderers hang out here, too? if it's the former, do y'all know of a tribe for boulderers? i like to do both, but i do more bouldering.

thanks!

so after a couple of months climbing (i'm about 2 1/2 months new to the sport) i've been pleased at the nice calouses that have formed on the surface of my hands .. sorta like natural gloves to protect my hands from blisters .. but my climb buddy (who ever keeps me humbled) says .. the best part is when you're climbing & your calouses rip right off!! so that's just what happened last night =( my 2 largest calouses (my finest trophies) ripped right off my pinky .. but i wasn't done climbing just yet .. i taped 'em up & went back for more .. they were fine 'till i removed the tape *ouch* which ripped the nice thick 'lids' right off the tender spots .... ick ..

boy do i feel like a kid again, comparing battle wounds the next morning after moshing in the pit ..

so share me some of yours (battle wounds) .. i'll bet some of you old-timers got some stories to make mine sound like an ant hill!

I'm heading to Yosemite to climb with some friends. It's my first time climbing there and I might go out earlier than the rest of my crew. Where should I go? I want to hike around or check out some books to get an idea of what not to miss. I'm still new to lead climbing, so if there are some easier sport climbs anyone would suggest, please tell me where I should be to check them out. Have you read any books I should pick up? Where's the best place to camp? I hear it's great to arrive earlier in the morning to grab a camp site. Do you have any other tips?

Thanks!!!

Anyone up for Split Mt next weekend? 7/15-16

Hey Mt.-eers,

I've got a hankering to climb a peak, but my usual mate has buggered out. Split Mt. is one of California's easier 14ers and should be an easy slog to the summit. Most seasons, it's just talus up the North Slope, but this year, with the generous winter, there's about 3000' of snow to get through-- crampons and ice axes are called for.

The plan goes something like this:

From the Bay Area, drive up late Thursday afternoon - after work, sleep somewhere between Tioga Pass and June Lake. Camping out or a hotel room is fine with me.

Friday, pick up permit in Bishop, rent a 4wd vehicle (to get to the trailhead I've got the arrangements made), drive to Big Pine, feed ourselves along the way, drive to the trailhead, hike up to Red Lake (10,500'), spend the nite.

Wake up early Saturday so that the snow is still hard for the ascent, make the peak before noon. Hike/glissade back down, pack up camp and head to the trailhead. Drive back Saturday night, get home late. I'd also be up for staying over and taking a more leisurely return.

A great trip log can be found at:
http://www-db.stanford.edu/~crespo/Pictures/Split02/

If you have a 4wd vehicle, that would make life even easier, and save us each about $60 in rental fees.

If you're keen, please let me know, I'm aching to get into some snow.

...We may be between 20 and 100 people, last weekend in july, and we are thinking (but not set on) Tahoe area. Accesibility and facilites are key. By myself, I love the more rugged sites and have less experience with this kind of thing, but with this crew we want to be gentle and accomodating for all levels of outdoorsy-ness. So, any suggestions you have are most appreciated!!!!

So where's everyone climbing these days? I was at Big Chief last weekend (near Truckee). Had to scrable up through some snow near the summit, the road was only open half way, and the trail was flood in places, but the weather and climbing were great!! Donner is really good, but the little bit of hiking sure cuts down the crowds.

As the previous poster said, I too have been out of the climbing world for a few years (a few too many) and I would like to get back into it. As I might need to reinvest in a new harness, I am initially interested in someone that might want to hit a gym for some bouldering or where I can rent a harness if necessary. In the day i was climbing up to 5.11's but i dont expect to be anywhere near that after a few years off.

I am interested in anyone, male or female, that might be interested in hanging out and catching me up on the sport a bit. :) I am also up for some easy outdoor stuff whent he weather is appropriate.

Hope to hear from someone.

Ok...so I used to climb regularly about 4 years ago. I've since dropped out of it, and I'm just now recovering from a serious motorcycle accident in November 2004.

I want to climb again. I miss how good it makes you feel. However, I HATE gyms. I hate paying for the membership, I hate the feel of plastic. I pretty much dislike everything about the gym.

Of course the only problem is that I have no car, and I have no license so I can't even rent a car to go climbing.

*le sigh* So...anyone know of any decent city walls that are traversable, etc?

*bats her lashes* Or anybody wanna take a bornagain climber climbing??? I have some gear. And I know my rope is still good. :D

Ah well.

I live in San Fran, where should i go to climb a wall or a rock face?

Are any or the indoor gyms more affordable than the others?

How about outdoor bolted areas in or around the city?

Anyone is keen for a partner, I'm all game! I dont have ropes though...

the fitness club bladium on the old alameda naval air station has both rock climbing and bouldering. on the upside, it's rarely packed, so there isn't a wait to climb anything. on the downside, there aren't too many people there and the community is severely lacking...

Hi all,

I'm a longtime lurker and this is my first post.

Has anyone here been rock climbing at Yosemite? I will be having a visitor from France staying with me for the next 2 1/2 weeks and she is an expert rock climber. She's bringing her own shoes and harnesses, but we need rope. Do the rocks at Yosemite have ropes set out, or is there a place in Yosemite that rents ropes?

Furthermore, I have never been climbing at Yosemite. Any particular spots you would recommend? She's an expert climber and expert belayer; I'm an intermediate climber and beginner belayer.

Also, she wants to camp there. Any particular campgrounds we should check out?

Thanks!

Hi, I'm looking to find some people to form a group of climbers with. I am especially looking for people who want to practise techniques and share knowledge. It is important to have total trust in your partner and so I'd like to meet up and rig some top-ropes, share anchoring ideas etc. I'm in East Bay but can travel to local areas and would like to go on some overnight trips later on.

I'd like to start climbing at Class 5 Tuesdays and/or Fridays. Early afternoons (lunch) are my only available times right now. The earliest I can be there is 11:30am, and typically have to leave no later than 2:00pm. I'd be up for anywhere from 1 to 2 hrs of climbing, depending on your schedule & stamina. Right now, I typically climb routes 5.9 and under, and wouldn't mind cliimbing with any skill level...I have fun on 5.4's too!
